If you're in the market for a new job, whether due to a lay off or because you're tired of your current one, there are certain things that you can do to ensure your success in landing your next job.

1. The first step is to put on paper what you are looking for in your next job. Wanting more money is not enough.. As a matter of fact, human resources studies have shown that many other things make for a satisfying work environment including health benefits, vacation time, opportunities for advancement, good working relationships and other non-monetary benefits.. Therefore, list on paper everything you would like in your next job including the type of industry you would like to work for, the location of the job, the corporate culture and anything else you can think of..

2. The next step is to read over your resume if you have one.. If you don't have one, then you will need to get an up to date resume completed before you can continue with the next steps.. If you do have a resume but it's outdated, then you'll need to revamp it.. For this step, you will need to make sure that your resume includes information that matches the type of job you're seeking.. In short, your resume needs to be targeted to the position you're seeking.. As an example, if you've got experience as a customer service representative and want to move in to a sales representative role, you will need to make sure that your resume includes details on how your current skills as a customer service rep can be transferred to a sales role.. As an example, you will need to include information on how you've increased sales by up-selling clients to other products, identified client needs and filled those needs with products or services..

3. The third step is to arrange for a few career alerts to arrive in your email inbox.. You can do this at a website called Indeed. This job search engine website can run searches in many countries around the world and in almost every city in those countries.. This website pulls job opportunities from every company website and job board for the location and job title parameters you've set.. You can set the program to send you job opportunities each week or even every day.. You can then submit your resume online for those jobs..

4. The fourth step is to identify companies you're interested in and contact them.. Currently, these companies may or may not be advertising any job opportunities.. Eventually, those companies will have a position open that may be perfect for you.. If, by chance, you can meet with the hiring manager of the team you've interested in working for before the job opening is published on the internet, you may get lucky and land the job.. The best part of this strategy is that you can virtually eliminate any job competition.. Companies find that it's much cheaper and easier to interview and hire someone they know than to advertise, collect and sift through thousands of resumes, interview 10 or 20 candidates and then make an offer to someone..

5. The fifth step is to hone your job interviewing abilities.. Talk to a family member or friend that you trust and ask them to do a role play with you.. Have your interview helper ask you a half a dozen to a dozen questions and practice answering them until you feel confident..

6. The sixth and last step is to calm down and relax.. It may take some time for you to land the perfect job.. It can take many weeks or months to find the right job.. Just because a few days have gone by without you hearing anything back on a job interview or resume submission, it does not mean that the job has been filled by someone else.. Keep looking and keep your cool and you will find the perfect job..
